A survey carried out by software giant Microsoft revealed the best place to buy pirated copies of their Windows 7 operating system.

It turns out that Moscow is the biggest Windows 7 pirate ever, and that more than 25 percent of the dealers in the city sold pirated copies of the software. Also, one in ten of the dealer come to your house and install it for you. Not much different from India then.

Microsoft has surveyed 2500 computer and software retailers in 53 cities across the Russian Federation. The Far Eastern part of Russia shames China and India when it comes to software piracy, with places like Yekaterinburg recording 41 percent pirated sales, Chelyabinsk 30 percent and Moscow 27 percent. However Moscow wins the pirate game due to the sheer volume of the Win 7 DVDs sold. And according to Yuri Zlobin, the head of the anti-piracy association, “The Russian Shield”, it was a lot worse than that in Moscow. Also, the numbers reported are still less than the actuals. Incidentally, Russia has the second-largest market for pirated products after China.

As we reported earlier, China is doling out gratuitous amounts of copies of Windows 7 on USB drives. The pen drive is being sold for a paltry 98 yuan, or about $14 (Rs 670). What’s more, the USB drive features Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer’s signature on the outside.

Pirated copies in DVD format of the new operating system continue to be sold openly in many malls and markets in China. You can get a pirated copy of Windows 7 (non-beta presumably) for 20 yuan (which is about $3 bucks). Windows 7 is cheapest in China, and is available for a paltry $58, and inspite of that most folks prefer to opt for the pirated deal of $3. Although China isn’t the only nation pirating Windows 7, India has followed suit and the pirates are selling the OS for as little as Rs 500 ($10) and those in Philippines are selling it for $1.5. While Windows Vista was widely pirated as well, Windows XP remains the most illegally distributed Operating System of all time.

The package measures just 0.02 of an inch thick and packs 32 GB of storage. The device is 40% thinner and lighter than a conventional memory package, according to the vendor.

The new device features a significantly thinner “bare” die, or chip, that measures half the thickness of a conventional die, Samsung said. The package comprises eight stacked NAND flash chips, built using a 30-nanometer production process.

In developing the super-thin dies, Samsung said it overcame the limits of conventional technology that led to an unacceptable drop in production yields when chips were less than 30 micrometres thick. The new dies are half that amount and will double the storage capacity in the same size memory package used today.

“We have achieved a major reduction in the thickness and weight of a large multi-die package to provide the best solution for combining higher density with multi-functionality in current mobile designs,” Tae-Gyeong Chung, VP of the development team within Samsung Electronics, said in a statement released Wednesday.

Assuming that power usage remains the same, boosting storage in memory packages without increasing size and weight means people can store more digital content in their smartphones and other mobile gadgets, making them more useful as computing devices.

Samsung did not announce any customers for the new products.

The new Samsung chips could find a home in solid-state drives used as a replacement for hard disk drives. While the high price of SSDs hurt sales in mobile PCs this year, the devices grew in popularity in corporate data centers and IT computing infrastructure.

Because of rising demand from corporations, SSD revenue this year will reach $883 million, up from $127 million last year, according to market researcher iSuppli. Unit shipments increased to 5.8 million units, up from 1.4 million units.

Samsung this month reported earnings in the third quarter more than tripled from the same period a year ago, due to gains in its chip business and higher mobile phone sales. Samsung is the world’s second largest maker of handsets. Nokia is the leading manufacturer.

The litigation, which involves 10 patents, was filed Thursday in the Federal District Court in Delaware. The patents at issue, Nokia said, involve GSM, UMTS (3G WCDMA), and wireless LAN standards.

“The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for,” said Ilkka Rahnasto, Nokia VP of legal and intellectual property, in a statement. “Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree [to] appropriate terms for Nokia’s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia’s innovation.” Apple did not immediately respond to reports about the Nokia complaint.

The litigation is just the latest in the mobile industry, which has been racked by scores of patent and intellectual property suits. Nokia itself was involved in long and bitter patent litigation with Qualcomm that was settled in July 2008 with Nokia agreeing to make payments to Qualcomm over a 15-year period. That agreement included licenses for GSM features, which appear to constitute a major piece of Nokia’s complaint against Apple.

Nokia pioneered GSM, which has figured in AT&T’s exclusive network deal with the iPhone in the United States. The AT&T network also utilizes UMTS, likewise cited in the Nokia litigation. AT&T was not named by Nokia in the litigation. The Nokia complaint appears to be aimed largely at handset intellectual property, although Nokia didn’t completely spell out the charges in its press release.

Nokia noted that it has successfully entered into licensing agreements with about 40 companies that include the patents cited in the Apple litigation, adding that it maintains that all Apple iPhones shipped since the smartphone’s debut infringe on Nokia patents that cover wireless data, speech coding, security, and encryption.
