LG launches Borderless and Wireless TVs

by Tech Guy on September 9, 2009

LG’s theme for its TVs at IFA 2009 is ‘Live Borderless’. This consumer electronic version of the Schengen Agreement is based on panels without visible borders.

Two ‘Borderless’ Full HD LCD panels, the SL8000 and SL9000, use a new injection compression moulding technique that creates a sleek, uninterrupted glasslike surface.

A special sheet of laminate film covers the televisions’ front surfaces, eliminating the line between the screen and the bezel while also reducing glare. The result is a uniform, seamless surface from edge-to-edge, with no visible frame.

Facebook buys social media aggregator FriendFeed

by Tech Guy on August 11, 2009

Facebook is buying a Web service called FriendFeed that gives users a view of what their friends are doing on all sorts of social media sites, including Facebook’s rivals.

In an interview, FriendFeed co-founder Bret Taylor said the two services will eventually merge, though FriendFeed will operate separately for now. He said FriendFeed was drawn to Facebook’s much larger base of 250 million users.

“Facebook has a really unique opportunity for our team to reach a significant percentage of the world, and that was an opportunity I think everyone on our team was extremely excited about,” he said.

Facebook said all 12 employees of Mountain View, Calif.-based FriendFeed will work for Facebook, whose headquarters is nearby in Palo Alto. FriendFeed’s four founders — Taylor, Paul Buchheit, Jim Norris and Sanjeev Singh — will take on senior positions on the engineering and product teams at Facebook.

It’s unclear what exactly Facebook plans to do with FriendFeed, which centers around the idea of instantaneously aggregating information from online destinations like short-messaging site Twitter, review site Yelp and photo-sharing site Flickr.

Gartner Inc. analyst Ray Valdes said the FriendFeed acquisition should help Facebook open up its site and boost features that show users more information in real time.

“They needed to do something to meet the Twitter challenge,” he said, referring to the messaging site that has shown the type of buzz Facebook once enjoyed.

Chris Cox, Facebook’s vice president of products, said the companies had been talking about a combination for some time, as they’re both working on solving the same problems: how to help people connect with one another over time, how to make these connections work on various devices and how to filter information through friends.

“I think both companies start with the premise that the most valuable information in the world is the one that comes from the people you care about,” he said. “Building technologies that leverage those relationships everywhere you go is where we’re both starting from.”

Cox would not say if Facebook plans to incorporate FriendFeed’s real-time search capability into its site. He said Facebook has already been testing real-time search and that FriendFeed has done a great job with its own search.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Facebook wants you to do it live

by Tech Guy on June 25, 2009

When Facebook launched its latest redesign, it became evident that the company was putting a lot of emphasis on real-time information–inspired, undoubtedly, by the runaway success of Twitter. Now the company’s rolled out two small but crucial new features that put instant updates even more front and center.

First, Facebook is aiming to use the “publisher” tool–formerly known as the status update box–as members’ gateway to the Web at large. Starting Wednesday and rolling out gradually, according to a post on the company blog, a beta version of the new content-sharing box will allow members to select exactly how public or private to make each piece of content that they share. The post by Facebook engineer Ola Okelola explained that something shared on a profile can be visible by friends, friends of friends, friends and networks (school, region, or company), user-created custom friends groups–or everyone on the Web.

facebook-social-networkingFacebook’s probably hoping that this will spur people to share more content: if members know that sharing a video, a photo, or even a status message won’t by default go out to everyone who can see their profile, they might be more likely to share things along the lines of party photos and videos of their kids.

But, wait. There’s more.

In addition, a post on the Facebook developer blog Wednesday explained that developers can now take advantage of live-streaming status update boxes much like the one that CNN used during President Obama’s inauguration this January. “With the Live Stream Box on your website, users log in using Facebook Connect and share updates that appear both within the Live Stream Box and on their Facebook profiles and in their friends’ home page Streams,” the post by Tom Whitnah explained. “Each post includes a link back to the Live Stream Box on your site so users can discover the live event and immediately join based on their friends’ recommendations.”

It’s intended so that people watching an event simultaneously can comment in sync on Facebook. And it’s also supposed to be a no-brainer to create your own, meaning that Facebook is hoping a lot of developers and site owners will jump on this bandwagon.

“The Live Stream Box is easy to install and takes just a minute to set up,” the post added. “To get the Live Stream Box on your website, get a Facebook API key, upload a small file to your website, and then embed a few lines of code into your Web page.”

This is a move clearly aiming in the direction of Twitter, where real-time updates and discussions around events have become so commonplace that members regularly agree on a “hashtag” to flag related posts in advance of the event. (For the inauguration, for example, it was #inaug09.) The question is whether Twitter use has already become the standard for chronicling and commenting on events in real time–will enough people be willing to use Facebook widgets rather than apps built on Twitter?
